Study Helps The Promised Holy Spirit - John 14:12-31

Study helps the holy spirit

THE POWER - vv. 12-14

  • Power - v. 12. Greater works than Christ. Greater in quantity, not in quality. We have printing presses, radio, TV, planes, trains, etc. All these Christ did not have.
  • Prayer - v. 13. Ask in the name of the Lord—He will do it for the glory of God.
THERE IS POWER IN HIS NAME!
  • Plan - v. 14. Pray in the name of Christ. Note Mark 16:16-20, seeing the power of the name of Jesus.

THE PROMISE - vv. 15-17

  • Spirituality - v. 15. We show our spirituality to God by keeping His commandments.
  • Spirit - vv. 16-17
  • Comforter - v. 16. The promised Holy Spirit, or the Comforter. Compare with John 16:7-14.
  • Character - v. 17. The worldly minded man would not recognize Him. Later, the Christian would have the fullness of the Holy Spirit. After Christ ascended, the Spirit would come.

THE PROSPECT - vv. 18-25

  • Promise - vv. 18-19. Christ would be taken into heaven, but would send His Holy Spirit. This was fulfilled in Acts 2:1-4.
  • Proof - vv. 20. Christ in God; or, Christ being equal with God. He had power to overcome death, later to ascend into heaven. Christ in God, and Christ in us.
  • Practice - v. 21. If we love Him, we will obey Him. LOVE ALWAYS OBEYS! As we obey Him, He will reveal Himself to us.
  • Plan - vv. 22-25. Judas (not Judas Iscariot) asks Christ why He didn't reveal Himself to all people.
CHRIST REVEALS HIMSELF ONLY TO THOSE WHO SEEK HIM.

THE PERSONALITY - vv. 26-31

  • Teacher - v. 26. The coming Holy Spirit would teach man. He would bring to remembrance the teachings of Christ. If we study, the Holy Spirit will help us understand and remember.
  • Trouble - v. 27. Christ gives peace! There is no need to be troubled. There may be trouble, but He gives peace.
  • Trinity - v. 28. Note how the Trinity works in harmony. Each person has great respect toward the others.
  • Testimony - vv. 29-31. Christ gives a testimony as to what would happen, so when it came to pass man would believe.
