INTRODUCTION

The second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother's Day. The founder of this day was Miss Anna Jarvis, a teacher in the primary department of St. Andrew Methodist Church, Graf ton, West Virginia, the class her deceased mother had taught. On May 12, 1907, Miss Jarvis passed out carnations to this class in honor of her mother. In this way Mother's Day was born.

Mother's Day gives us an appropriate occasion to reflect upon some great mothers of the Bible.

HOW DID SAMUEL GET HIS START AS A GREAT MAN OF GOD?

  • Mother's prayers - "For this child I prayed," 1 Sam. 1:27.
  • She dressed him for the church services, 2:18-19.
  • "The child was young" when she took him, 1 Sam. 1:24.
  • She recognized God's ownership of the child, v. 28.
  • Hannah rejoiced over this arrangement with God, 2:1.

IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, CONSIDER TIMOTHY, A GREAT PASTOR.

  • He pastored the great Ephesian church, 1 Tim. 1:3.
  • Paul looked to him for comfort, 2 Tim. 4:9.
  • Where did Timothy get his start? "First in thy grandmother... and in thy mother," 2 Tim. 1:5.

SOME OF A CHILD'S MOST SACRED MEMORIES OF MOTHER:

  • One who really cared for his happiness in life.
  • One who really cared for his soul.
  • One whose bosom gave the greatest comfort.
  • The most unselfish person he ever knew.
  • The blessed doctor in times of sickness.
  • The queen of the kitchen - none can cook like she can.

THE POWER OF A MOTHER'S LOVE?

  • World famous painter - Benjamin West: "Mother's kiss made me an artist."
  • St. Augustine: "Mother's prayers made me a saint."
  • Americans may say: "Give us more Abraham Lincolns!" Rather let us say: "Give us more godly mothers!" for Lincoln said: "All I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother."
